Paying Speeding Ticket a Few Months Late? And Being Out of the Country?

Postby breasal » Mon Jul 30, 2012 7:20 am

I don't know why people always start off questions asking about speeding tickets with "This is my first ticket ever" "I always obey the law".
The honest truth is I am a notorious speedster. I was born with a lead foot. I am one of the Duke boys. And this is my confession and inquiry.
But let me preface the question to say, that I have a whole bunch of tickets added up in my lifetime. I've had my license suspended twice. No DUIs or anything reckless other than speeding. So please no moralizing or preaching. I get that enough already and it doesn't do any good.. BUT...I have as of today gotten my first ticket probably in over two years. I HAVE matured to some degree. But today I couldn't resist and I was busted. In the great state of Alabama. By some small town police in the hometown of Hank Williams. But here's the thing.
I am moving to China in a month and a half. In fact, the court date is for the day before I fly out. I know that if I do not pay, then eventually a warrant could be sent out for my arrest or maybe additional charges may accrue. But my question is....how long will I have before these events transpire? I will have just enough money to live off in China until I get my first paycheck, So that would be the reason for my delay. But after that first paycheck or two, I could settle the costs. (that is if they haven't skyrocketed too terribly much after only a few months after the court date. What do you think?

You'll probably find that your license has been suspended when you return. That'll probably cost you $100 or so to reinstate plus the cost of the ticket + court costs. And you'll have to retest.

Ok. Been there, done that. I've lived over seas and I also had a lead foot for driving...its my only vice really. Call and get on a payment plan. They will do that for you.

In my day, I just sent money to a friend who took care of my bills for me but today you are much luckier with the internet. Pay your bills on line and have your bank automatically pay the agreed amount. If they know you are trying to pay, they will work with you. Call the court and ask for a payment plan. I'm 90% sure you won't be denied and you won't have to worry about being arrested or having your license suspended when you get back.

Just show you care by calling them for a payment plan for all tickets. You've matured and you're willing to make good on it. They'll add up your tickets (plus interest maybe) and give you an affordable monthly bill.

Like I said, I've been there and I've done that but I've never let a ticket go unpaid without calling the court and letting them know payment was on the way. I wouldn't rack up tickets again. Not even parking tickets.
