Police and Sheriff dept. job disqualifiers?

Postby hurst » Fri Oct 28, 2011 2:52 am

Okay im 16 now and a member a boy scout troop.
I messed up when i was 15 and smoked marijuana 2 times.
I have no criminal history
I have good credit
I've been clean for a year
I know that after you take the BLET's they give you a polygraph test
my question is will i still be able to join the sheriff's department or the police department or do i just have to throw it out the window now?
The sheriff of my county ( in NC ) is a parent in my scout troop and i am very close to him but he also instructed me in drug prevention. i Know one of his pet peeves is drugs and he has worked on narcotics for 5 years.
i want to know if i can still get a job or if I just shouldnt waste 9 months of my life taking B.L.E.T's (basic law enforcement training)
i know ive messed up but please tell me what my options are
I make fair grades and i am in an early college high school program so i will have my 2 year associates degree by 2012 with my HS diploma
thank you

Many teens mess up in their young lives. If you have realized your mistake, accepted responsibility for it, and led an exemplary life from that point forward, you should be fine! Go for it.

Why don't you ask the sheriff, a willingness to speak candidly about mistakes says a lot (and believe me, when we are kids we all make mistakes, they people that don't learn from them are the ones who they want to weed out). It really does sound like you are a good guy, that you have researched what you need to do and that you are making and effort to do it, good luck!

Police and Sheriff dept. job disqualifiers?

Smoking marijuana twice will not disqualify you from taking BLET and should not DQ you from being hired. Each agency has it's own standards for hiring but I doubt one would stop you from working for it for smoking pot twice. I know several Officers that have smoked pot in the past but it was light use and they had quit long before they applied. You can be a Police Officer or Deputy.

Remember when you apply to be honest with the agency. Smoking pot twice won't DQ you but lying will.

Ok, first of all were you convicted of drug possession? Or anything like that? Did you serve time? If the answer is no, and you REMAIN clean you should be fine.

Don't worry about the marijuana use years ago. Don't hide it during interviews, but if you've been clean since then you should have a good future in law enforcement if that's what you want.

It will effect you going to the police academy..you have to get sponsors
just be 100% honest with them..dont hide any thing if they find out then you have no chance!
