Popcorn Lung? Sounds fake, but real disease.?

Postby akule76 » Tue Jun 03, 1986 9:18 am

I read a news article and then found this listed on wikipedia corresponding to it....I know wikipedia is not the most reliable source, but see the sources for the page.

Heres a small excert - n rare instances, bronchiolitis obliterans may be caused by inhalation of airborne diacetyl, a chemical used to produce the butter-like flavoring[7] in many foods such as candy, microwave popcorn and wines. This first came to public attention when eight former employees of the Gilster-Mary Lee popcorn plant in Jasper, Missouri, developed bronchiolitis obliterans. In 2000, the Missouri Department of Health called in NIOSH to make a determination of the cause, and to recommend safety measures. After surveying the plant and each patient's medical history, NIOSH recommended respiratory protection for all workers in microwave popcorn production. Due to this event, bronchiolitis obliterans began to be referred to in the popular media as "Popcorn Lung" or "Popcorn Workers Lung".[4][8][9]

One heavy consumer of microwaved popcorn has been diagnosed with this disease, which is the first known case involving a consumer.[13]

Point is if this is real what about all this new info on Baked Macaroni causing Cancer because of it's poreous nature and the cookware it is baked in? There seems to be alot of people asking this and it is trending on yahoo answers really quickly. Please let me know if anyone has any additinal info on either of these?

I just thought it was when you were eating pop corn and you in hailed a kernel and choked on it...Hmm the things you learn.

Can you die from this? Is this something I can get a vaccination for?If I just don't eat or be near pop corn preparing with this be enough for me not to contract? what if some one has it on their hands? Does wearing a mask or respirator help? im really starting to worry... i'm having a hard time breathing!!...brb

Popcorn Lung? Sounds fake, but real disease.?

The problem is that the guy that they are referring to is a HEAVY user of this. Meaning that he ate it EVERY day SEVERAL times a day. I remember this from the news articles and the doctors that came and spoke on the news. The man that got 'popcorn' lung loved the SMELL of the popcorn, loved the taste and what not. So he was breathing in all that steam/particles every time he made popcorn.
By rational explanation it is a sure fire way to get cancer to inhale particles into your lungs. Why you do think there was 'black lung' disease for coal miners? because they were inhaling coal dust everywhere they went in the mine. Popcorn lung is the equivalent of that.

The only way you can get this kind of cancer is to be eating these things EVERY day at basically every meal. And not just eating them, but smelling them while they are cooking and after they are cooking. Plus, do you know how LONG it would take for those particles to build up and cause cancer? The man that got popcorn lung had been inhaling popcorn steam for DECADES. So I hardly think that is a threat to our lives.

As a former truck driver, I've hauled my share of loads out of Gilster-Mart Lee. They have employees there who have worked at the plant for decades with no ill effects. For something like what you're describing to happen, it would have to be intentional (not "intentional" as in suicidal, but "intentional" as in not using common sense).

I can't say that I blame the people affected. I always loved going to that place. Not just because of the free popcorn I got, but because after unloading a trailer full of butter flavored popcorn, the aroma would linger in the trailer for weeks. Heaven on wheels.
