Question about naming/ deciding important thing about character?

Postby morcan » Tue Dec 13, 2011 9:15 pm

Okay. I'm writing a fanfic for Harry Potter and I invented a new character. I'm just trying to choose between names and wand woods, and then I'll be set! So- here she is-

She’s pale, but not freakishly so. She has long straight hair that’s a very light golden brown. Her eyes are green with gold flecks. She has a spindly, tattoo-ish birthmark that traces the bridge of her nose and curls around her cheeks, very faint but still present. She has a small, slightly upturned nose with light freckles, and is very petite, and her eyes are large. She is not shockingly beautiful, but possesses a sweet prettiness. She was a Hatstall- had the Sorting Hat on for seven and a half minutes, due to its determination to have her in Ravenclaw but her desire to be in Gryffindor. She would do well in both, but is a true Gryffindor at heart, so, exasperated, the Hat places her in Gryffindor. She doesn’t care much for Quidditch, saying it’s not a real sport because no one runs. She has a sense of humor, but she uses it sparingly, and is extremely confident, almost to the point of recklessness. She likes a good drink and is especially fond of butterbeer. She is competitive and jealous, but rarely lets any feelings show- more understanding then kind.

So-
Atlanta- Unswaying
Aerona (Air-OWN-uh)- Battle Deity
Eirwyn (IRE-wen)- White As Snow
Aoife (EE-fah)- Beautiful, Radiant

And for her wand-
Black Walnut
Less common than the standard walnut wand, that of black walnut seeks a master of good instincts and powerful insight. Black walnut is a very handsome wood, but not the easiest to master. It has one pronounced quirk, which is that it is abnormally attuned to inner conflict, and loses power dramatically if its possessor practises any form of self-deception. If the witch or wizard is unable or unwilling to be honest with themselves or others, the wand often fails to perform adequately and must be matched with a new owner if it is to regain its former prowess. Paired with a sincere, self-aware owner, however, it becomes one of the most loyal and impressive wands of all, with a particular flair in all kinds of charmwork.

Red Oak
You will often hear the ignorant say that red oak is an infallible sign of its owner’s hot temper. In fact, the true match for a red oak wand is possessed of unusually fast reactions, making it a perfect duelling wand. Less common than English oak, I have found that its ideal master is light of touch, quick-witted and adaptable, often the creator of distinctive, trademark spells, and a good man or woman to have beside one in a fight. Red oak wands are, in my opinion, among the most handsome.
Cedar
Whenever I meet one who carries a cedar wand, I find strength of character and unusual loyalty. My father, Gervaise Ollivander, used always to say, ‘you will never fool the cedar carrier,’ and I agree: the cedar wand finds its perfect home where there is perspicacity and perception. I would go further than my father, however, in saying that I have never yet met the owner of a cedar wand whom I would care to cross, especially if harm is done to those of whom they are fond. The witch or wizard who is well-matched with cedar carries the potential to be a frightening adversary, which often comes as a shock to those who have thoughtlessly challenged them.

Please nothing stupid or annoying like "Get a life and stop writing fanfiction" or "This sounds really dumb, give up". I just want to know your opinion. I got all of the information on woods on Pottermore.

Thanks in advance!

Question about naming/ deciding important thing about character?

Postby gilleabart » Tue Dec 13, 2011 9:18 pm

I think it would be best if YOU picked the name of your character. And her wand too. Since it's YOUR character which you will be writing, You should name her so you can 'love' her and write great stories for her.

Writing fan fiction with original characters is all about the experience you, as the author. will have with it, not us, the possible reader.

Don't ask us to name your character! We don't know her, you do! It's your privilege to name her and then by writing about her, give her life. If you do that well, we will love her, no matter what her name is or her wand. As the writer it's your 'duty' to create her, naming her yourself is a strong part of that. And some writers don't name their main character until the story has been finished, for only then could they make that final decision!

Remember, all writers wrote that first story for themselves, even Ms. Rowling, so write this for your self first and think about us readers, well, last of all really! (Some writers never write for anybody BUT themselves!)

I very much enjoy writing fanfic. I hope you will enjoy writing your new character!
