This might have made sense in the 30's... This might have made sense in the early 50?s when there may have been a single radio station in a market. That is no longer the case. Now there is lots of competition and choice in the market. The effort to reinstate the fairness doctrine is simply an effort to stifle the success of conservative talk radio. Liberals have tried to compete and failed. Even many liberals would rather listen to Rush than Dead Air America. Why? Because even though they don?t agree with Rush, he is entertaining. Did you notice that ONLY talk radio is being addressed? Of course, it is the only part of the media that is dominated by conservatives. It is also dominated by conservatives because people are CHOOSING that way. I might be persuaded to support the "fairness doctrine" provided we are allowed to address the "structural imbalance" in network news, news amgazines(Time & Newsweak[sic], and newspaper editorial boards across the US. I?ll toss Fox News into the mix if I can have a go at CNN & MS/LSD. Can?t compete in the national Marketplace of Ideas? No problem, just have the government stifle your competition. And here I thought that liberals were all in favor of "Free Speech."
