Should I sign the lease on my house or should I let my mother?

Postby matchitisiw » Wed Aug 01, 2012 2:40 am

I'm 19, a sophomore in college and moving permanently (atleast for the next 4 more years) to the city in which my college is located. My friend and I have a three bedroom house that we are converting into a 4 bedroom (the basement is turning into the 4th room). Her dad owns it and we pay him rent which is around 350 a month. While i'm at school part of it will be covered by left over financial aid and the rest i'll pay from working at my job. My mother is wanting to sign the lease and is VERY adamant about it but I feel like since I am the one paying for it, I should sign the lease so that I will have the legal and final say over the house and the terms of my lease. Every time I bring this up to my mother she gets upset. But legally even though I pay the rent if she were to sign the lease she could terminate my lease agreement any time she wanted. And also I will be living there entirely year round only going home for Christmas and thanksgiving...shouldn't I be the one signing the lease then? How do I get my mom to be okay with this?

you should definitely be signing the lease - just tell yher you want to do this as you first step to being indepedent - but that is probably the issue..... she is worried about "losing" you and having empty nest syndrome - I think she just wants to feel needed still.

Think you have to understand why your mother does not want you to sign the lease. Hope she has got a good reason and thats what you should be working to reassure her. Got a feeling the problem is located in you.

Always sign your lease, never let anyone take over for you.
