Should police officers be required to observe absolute sobriety?

Postby jordi » Mon Mar 19, 2012 7:17 am

Police officers are very zealous about writing drunk driving tickets. Over the years I have read and heard of many cases where off duty police officers have been involved in drunk driving incidents and had the whole thing covered up, thrown out of court or gotten off with very minimal punishment. I feel all traffic officers should be required to observe absolute sobriety at ALL times until they leave the police force or retire. Any opinions on that?

If you stop, then I agree, if not, no.

I don't think they should have to be sober at all times if they can be responsible about it. Plenty of people can and do drink and be responsible. But if they drive drunk they should be kicked off the police force.

Um, no, that would be infringing on their rights as citizens. They should be held to the law like everyone else.

Not all officers are "very zealous" about arresting DUI. I hate dealing with drunks. It is always an officers discretion, and yes I (along with others) have given people rides home. I am curious about your claim...can you cite a single incident where the police "covered up" a DUI involving an off duty officer? Thanks.

To answer your question: You, like many others, feel police officers should have less rights than other citizens, on and off duty. No I disagree

They're already prohibited from smoking. Let's not take away their alcohol too...

Even better yet, let's go back to Prohibition.........being responsible when you drink is everyones duty. Sounds to me like you fell of the wagon and got a DUI pinch. Only a very tiny number of annual DUI related accidents involve Police officers. far more involve bus and cab drivers. Because of the statistics, would we get them to abstain too. Or, is it the fact that you have a hard on for the people who enforce drunk driving laws.

They should be fined\jailed 3X that what a normal human receives for any crimes they are caught committing, instead of getting paid vacation.

This will never happen, they will continue to get away w\ their criminal activity.
