Some advice on careers that suit my personality/interests?

Postby eoforwic » Wed Jun 29, 1983 2:20 pm

i am a senior in high school and haven't made a decision for the future. i don't know what information really helps, but please tell me what you think is good for me.

i am not a social person. i am not very skilled with technology but i always remember how to do something after someone helps me the first time. i am a hard worker at school (4.7 gpa) and i am a perfectionist (most of the time). i am a good artist and decent athlete (a short physique seems to be only a disadvantage these days). i am tomboyish. i don't have a favorite subject, but i think my favorite assignments are lab reports, research papers, and big projects (of course as an individual project). i am told that i am a pretty good teacher/tutor, but i find the sessions awkward because i don't know how to "hang out" with the people/person afterward. i like to go for long drives in the car, read books, watch action movies, go to amusement parks, and travel. i wanted to be a surgeon but i don't like chemistry. i wanted to be an engineer, but i am finding my aerospace engineering class this semester the most dreadful high school class. i am not looking for something that's a high paying career, just something that suits me.

sorry for the big jumble of information. if you know someone that has a similar personality like mine or you have an idea of what career path is right for me, please let me know. thank you!

In college you will be exposed to a wide variety of possible fields of study in the first couple of years. By that time you should have a good idea of the direction you want to take. Don't worry that you don't know your career path at this time. That is a pretty normal state of affairs.

1. Go to your school counselor and ask to take some career testing. These may help you determine careers that will give with your abilities and interests. Make sure you do the best you can and also answer honestly for the best results. the tests are actually fun to take and the results are interesting. (You may get a test that asks: which would you rather do: milka cow or balance a check book? Even if you HATE both items, still choose the best of two evils - don't just blow it off. These weird questions help in determining ones preferences.)

2. You might like jobs like doing research, being an analyst, accounting, travel agent/travel writer, technical writer, etc.

3. Use your first year of college to do most of the general education courses and try out new subjects. Do volunteer work - perhaps you might find out more about yourself.

Good luck!
