Speeding ticket reduced to 5mph over. Is it worth fighting?

Postby ammi » Thu Jul 19, 2012 1:22 pm

I live in DE, and was caught doing 64 in a 50. Conditions were clear, traffic was light, and I was driving down a rural road. When I was pulled over, I was cordial with the officer and did not admit anything. He reduced my violation from 14 miles over to 5 miles over. I was not assigned a mandatory court date. The ticket has both my recorded speed (64) and my "charged speed" as 55.

Since he already reduced the speeding ticket, is this worth fighting? Does anyone know if going 5 miles over in DE will affect my insurance with Geico? Im 19, going to college, and unfortunately do not have a lot of extra cash to shell out on tickets (and yes I know, I should'nt speed if I don't want a ticket)

Its not worth it. Just pay the ticket and avoid going more then 10 mph over the limit at any time. You should start worrying about insurance if this isn't your first ticket, and get them often.

You should probably get it handled because it will affect your insurance and tickets stay on there for 3 years, the reason he probably changed what the ticket was for is because in most rural areas they don't get the money from the ticket unless it's within a certain limit and if it's not it usually goes to the state so he probably changed it so the jurisdiction you were in gets to keep the money

It shouldn't affect your ticket because it was less than 10 over.

I'd pay the ticket and be happy. If you fight it, you might get it put back up to that 64... and it will be reported to your insurance then.

Oh, and the ticket for 14 over will be much more.

It changes the fine but a ticket is still a ticket.
