A summer job for a 13 year old is babysitting, delivering the newspaper, walking a dog, mowing lawns, cleaning or doing other household chores. Employers do not hire 13 year olds for retail jobs. Employers generally prefer to hire mature responsible adults aged 18 or older. It will probably be two years before you can get a job.
People under 18 years of age cannot work more than 40 hours each week in New Jersey or more than eight hours in one day. After working for five hours in a row, a minor must take at least a 30-minute break. Minors under 16 years old cannot work after 7 p.m. or before 7 a.m., nor can they work more than three hours a day during the school term. However, during summer vacation (defined as between the last day of the school year and Labor Day), 14- and 15-year-olds employed at a store, supermarket or restaurant may work until 9 p.m.
New Jersey requires that minors obtain a work certificate from their school district before starting a job. Exceptions to this rule include if the minor is over 16 years of age and employed in agriculture or if he is 14 years or older and employed at a farm, dog or horse show or agriculture fair for no more than 10 days when school is not in session.
A regular employment certificate permits the minor to work when school is in session, during school hours. A vacation certificate permits a minor to be employed during summer vacation and during other breaks.
The minor's employer receives a copy of the certificate, as does the Department of Labor in Trenton, New Jersey. The issuing school district keeps a copy of the certificate for its records.
