Teen admitted into the hospital having a catheter put in nervous?

Postby blaeey » Tue Mar 27, 2012 8:16 am

Hi am am 13/f and I been having problem peeing and had a spiked fever. I been in the ER for the whole afternoon and now been admitted into the hospital. I've been admitted for a kidney infection and a uti while my patents were leaving to go home because the visiting hours were way over I overheard them talking to my doctor and my doctor said that they will have to measure something that in a few hours they will need to put in a foley catheter in me my parents said that would be fine. I am so scared I really don't like needles and I was crying when they put an Iv in me and blood work. What is this thing they are talking about what does it do and will it hurt. Please help me I am so scared I never been in a hospital before overnight.

Not really a needle its more like a soft tube that goes up into your bladder, and yes it does hurt a little bit but not much mostly stings a little.

Urethral catheterization is a routine medical procedure that facilitates direct drainage of the urinary bladder. Its something thats not a big deal.. maybe a little weird. It goes up you and has something to do with your pee. Take a deep breath relax and close your eyes when they put it in. Just uncomfortable but doesn't hurt. Hang in there..

wont be bad, just close your eyes. I worked in a nursing home and there are people there who get it done like a couple of times a day, some men even do it themselves. I had it done after I gave birth (natural-vaginal birth) and all I felt was a pinch. it will be over in less than a minute.

A catheter is not a needle. It is a plastic tube that goes up your urethra (where you pee).

They are probably trying to measure the amount of urine your body is producing.

Sorry that you are scared and by yourself in the hospital right now. Don't get stressed out- a foley catheter does not involve a needle. It is a soft flexible tube that can be put into your urethra to help empty your bladder. It doesn't really hurt, it is just a little uncomfortable at first. I know it is scary when you overhear doctors talking about things they might do to you- but you are allowed to ask the nurses about anything that you overheard. Tell them that you are feeling nervous about it and would like information. Sometimes the things we imagine are worse than the actual procedure. Even adults are scared about being in a hospital and having medical procedures done to them- it is totally normal. I bet if you talk to the nurses you will feel a lot better about the whole situation. Medical professionals will always tell you what they are going to do before they do it. Hopefully your urine output will be fine and you will not need the catheter. Try and get some rest tonight so your body can recover from the infection. Good luck

don't worried its not that bad. The nurse will insert a Flexible tube into your bladder to drain your pee out and the tube will be connected to a bag that will hang at the end of your bed. its not painful at all just embarrassing
