There appears to be an ongoing barrage of crackpot legislation originating in the nation's heartland and pushed by conservative Republicans. McCain's public wringing of hands is instructive in that it points to the fact that there is at present a profound crisis in the Republican party. In the hinterlands the party has been effectively seized by cult like factions intent on rolling back social advances of the past 100 years. While the inclination to revel in the idiocies displayed by backwater Republicans is always there, the consequences for our country are no laughing matter. The devolution of the Republican party into an arm of social inquisition bodes the nation great ill. The crisis for what remains of the rational wing of the party is clear and ominous. We as a nation are in for a spectacle as this struggle plays out.
