The one part of the Arizona law that was upheld was the authority to check immigration status if the person was arrested for any other reason. At least that part held. Yes, one of the FEW responsibilities delegated to the federal government by the Constitution was to protect our borders. But when the federals do not live up to that responsibillity, of course the border states, which are so badly affected by the Mexican problem(primarily) are going to try to uphold the law themselves. It's about time the federal government stepped up to the plate here, instead of meddling in everyone else's affairs around the world. I understand the SC's ruling, but it does leave New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas in a real bind. California, not so much -- they are already bankrupt trying to appease unions and take care of all the illegals. tuppence 18 months ago
