Toledo Produce Scale - Circa 1918-20

Postby Rodric » Sat Apr 02, 2016 5:23 pm

I am interested in information about a scale, including the range in potential value, if any.  Its use appears to have been for weighing 'produce' 'vegtables,' etc. with a maximum capacity of 3 lbs.  It is identified on the body of the scale as a Style: 405 A R No. 358297 manufactured by Toledo Scale Company, Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A. 5 patent numbers are shown ranging from Sep. 11, 1906 thru Oct. 8, 1918 plus a Patent Pending - 2111 -.  Knowing the significance of the pending patent would also be interesting and appreciated. Thanks for your information and help.

Sincerely,

Phil

Hi Phil,

Allen De Vilbiss was issued patent number 830976 for a fan top computing scale on Sept. 11, 1906. De Vilbiss was from Toledo, Ohio and assigned his patent to the Toledo scale Co. You can view the patent here: http://www.google.com/patents?id=lL9tAAAAEBAJ&pg=PA1&dq=830976&source=gbs_select...

Patent number 1280936 was issued to Carl Zinke of Toledo on Oct. 8, 1918 for a flat scale pan with pouring lip incorporated into its design. It too, was assigned to Toledo Scale and may be viewed here: http://www.google.com/patents?id=J9VjAAAAEBAJ&pg=PA1&dq=1280936&source=gbs_selec...

Patent pending means that a patent has been applied for but not issued. According to the US Patent & Trademark Office: "Without a patent application on file with the Patent Office, the laws do not

allow the term patent pending or similar indicia to be placed on a product."

Most of these small Toledo 3 pound capacity model 405 scales were used for weighing candy and were complete with a brass scoop.

Value of your scale unrestored might be $75-$150 depending on condition while scales restored to better than new bring from $450-$850 depending on the company or restorer selling them.

Hope this helps.
