Hi Jim,
These large horizontal barrel computing scales were used in grocery or general stores to weigh meat or produce. The milk glass plate was easily washed between uses if necessary. Your scale was most likely manufactured in the late 1910s or early 1920s due to the patent dates listed on it. Patent 674646 was issued on May 21, 1901 to Allen DeVilbiss of Toledo, Ohio for a fan top computing scale. Patent number RE 12029 was issued on Sept. 9, 1902 to Allen DeVilbiss of Toledo, Ohio for a fan top computing scale. Patent number 1253239 was issued on Jan. 15, 1918 to Clarence Hapgood for a horizontal barrel top computing scale. Patents can be viewed by entering their numbers, one at a time in the search box here: http://www.google.com/patents?hl=en Your scale would have originally have had a light on its top mounted in the circular hole to illuminate the dial for the merchant. Retail value might be $75-$300.
Hope this helps.
