Postby Birkitt » Wed Apr 15, 2015 4:03 am

We have a 60 lb counter scale with the following on the front: Patented Mar. 29 1898, Dec. 27, 1898. July 19, 1898. Mar 14, 1899. May 26, 1903. Pelouze Manufacturing Co. Chicago.  It says American _________ Scale on the one side. The panel on the other side is missing.  It is rusty but works.

ANSWER: Hi Treva,

Please send photos of your scale to us at [email protected] so that we can properly evaluate your scale.

Thanks,

Hi Treva,

W. N. Pelouze had several patents before he started his Pelouze Scale and Manufacturing Company in Chicago around 1903  (the company website www.Pelouze.com states "Since 1894 Pelouze has been recognized throughout the world as the leading manufacturer of precision scales". They had their factory at 403-413 Ohio St. until 1908 when they built a "new reinforced concrete, fire proof" building at 232-242 E Ohio St.

Pelouze manufactured bow front, dial faced, beam and computing postal scales from the 1890s into at least the 1940s.

These mechanisms and designs were all utilized by the Pelouze Scale & Mfg. Co. and by its successor the Pelouze Manufacturing Co. for many years in mail scales as well as many of their family and confectionary scales.

Today, Pelouze scales are still being manufactured by Rubbermaid Incorporated and Pelouze is a registered trademark of the Rubbermaid Corp.

Patent number 601273 was issued on March 29, 1898 to W N Pelouze for a bow front postal scale and the mechanism that was used in their scales for many years.  Patent number D30399 was issued to W N Pelouze on March 28, 1899 for a face design for a family scale. Patent number 729207 was issued to F Mulligan on May 26, 1903 for an adjusting screw for spring scales and assigned to Pelouze.

Your family scale dates from the early 1900s but due to the rust retail value might be $10-$15.

Hope this helps,
