I am interested in applying the "TM" symbol to my film production company's name (Its a small independent company, so I am not currently planning to register the trademark...just want to use the TM symbol)

My question is, say my company's name is "ABC productions". Would I trademark the entire name including the word "Productions" or can I only trademark the unique part of the name "ABC" as opposed to the entire name "ABC Productions"?

You would trademark what you want to protect. In your example "ABC Productions". And just applying for the use of the TM symbol does nothing to protect you. You need to register the trademark and be prepared to defend it as needed.
