We live out in the country and I know there is no leash law, but is there a law on how many dogs you can have?

My neighbors have 18 dogs total. Eleven of them are Yellow Mountain Cur Dogs(hog hunting dogs). They rarely come on my property but when they do it is usually when my kids are outside. I am afraid they will end up attacking one of the kids. I have took it to the neighbors nicely but they haven't done anything about it. Their dogs also chases their truck everytime they leave and they end up in front of my house, then my dogs run to the road. One of my dogs has got ran over from this and cost me $600 to have his leg fixed. Which I understood it's my dog and he shouldn't been in the road, but I am afraid to chain him cause if their dogs come on my property and attack him he will have no way to get away. I really need to know where I stand on this cause I don't want to wait til it's to late and my kids be one on the news that has been attacked! Thank you. Any ideas where the laws stand in the state of Texas?

Look it up.

That being said, you can call the police about dogs on your property, I believe. It is your propety, after all, and if you don't want them there they shouldn't be there and it can be reported.

And what makes you think they will attack your kids? Have these dogs acted in an aggressive manner to your children? Just because they are hunting dog doesn't mean they are a danger to people.

As to answer your question you will have to call your local animal control and ask. with that many dogs your neighbor more than likely has a kennel license.

And whether he does or not that has ZERO to do with the fact he's not keeping them from roaming.

Look it up.

Where I live, we have seven dogs on the property, and animal control was okay with it as long as there weren't any complaints.

It totally depends upon the county or town in which you have. I suggest you call Animal Control and ask them.

Well tell the neighbor to control the dogs, or you'll have the law on them to control your neighbors dogs for them.
Besides I don't think you neighbors can even care for 18 dogs properly. The 18 dogs would be better off with new owners.
You don't want to wait until it too late for your doggie, do you?

Your neighbor not containing his dogs is not what got your dog run over. That was you not containing your dog.

Most likely you have a roaming law in your area. Leash laws aren't related to roaming. If the dogs are ending up on your property they are roaming, and in some areas that would get them shot. You can report him for his dogs leaving his control. You can call animal control and ask them what the rule is about dog numbers. It really depends on your exact location what the limitations are. Likely if all the dogs are in good health and provided with shelter, water and food they probably won't do much.

Have the dogs shown any sign of interest in your kids? The dogs showing aggressive tendencies is more likely to get animal control interested.

The easiest solution is fencing some of your yard to both keep out the other dogs and your dogs in along with providing an area your kids can play in. Yes it is obnoxious that you would need to do so to keep other dogs out, but your dogs getting out is your fault. Alternate solution is obviously stop letting your dog wander around unsupervised and keep it inside when you can't watch it. That would of course keep most of your problems from happening.
