What do his actions mean?

My art class is divided into groups. Unfortunately for me, I got involved with the mean group. Since I'm not the type of person who tries to get involved in fights, they pick on me a lot. But I'm not worried about them except for this one guy. He's the kinda person who can literally be rude to the other students and they'd just laugh it off. I recently realized that he doesn't make fun of me—in fact he comes to my rescue at times. One time this one guy at our table said something rude to me, and when everyone else cheered for him, he didn't. But when I said something rude back, he cheered. one time after the entire group treated me like crap, he just sat there and stared at me for a long period of time.
Also, when I walk into class, he'd stare at me until I sit down. He'd also compliment me on my art work although it isn't that great.
What does this mean?

Perhaps he's developed feelings for yu, or maybe he's tired of how everyone is treating you.
I know it's scary, but maybe you should ask him.
