What do I need to do to put a suppressor on a .22 pistol?

Postby chadburne48 » Thu Aug 02, 2012 12:16 am

The past few weeks I've capped off my spending for this year on guns so I'm planning my shopping list for next year. I was thinking about a truck gun, a new boar rifle, and maybe a toy for fun.

So right now I'm thinking about different toys that I can get. I'm only weighing options so price isn't an issue. I'll be 21 next year also and am planning on getting my CCW permit as soon as possible, so that should help me with some requirements.

I've seen Sig Mosquitos and a few other .22 pistols come up on armslist for around $300 and they come with threaded barrels. So I figured if I got a toy to use solely when I go home and we have property outside a half a mile in the woods off a dirt road, I can shoot it there. And maybe if I can find a range and laws will allow me to transport it to that range, then I will shoot it there as well.

I figured $300 for the gun, $200 for the tax stamp, and I've seen 22lr suppressors go for around $400 to $500 online and in gunshows. So I figured that at $1000, I can have a pretty cool gun. I don't have a use for it. I want it "just because". And before I get rants about that, people have used the excuse "I did it just because" to justify way worse things.

So my question is what paperwork will I need to file and where do I find it? Do all threaded barrels for 22lrs fit .22 suppressors? How long will the process take? My state is NC and my locality is Greensboro. I would really like it if someone who has done something similar to this to answer this question as well. I feel like this is a big process to undertake but it's do-able or the ATF wouldn't offer it as something that civilians can legally own.

Assuming you have a .22 with a threaded barrel, you have two possible routes:

1) Go to a local gun shop that sells suppressors
2) Pick out a suppressor you want to buy
3) Fill out the BATFE "Form 4" and pay $200
4) Pay for the suppressor
5) Take it home and have fun

or you can:

1) Download the BATFE "Form 1"
2) Fill it out, send it in with the $200
3) Receive your tax stamp
4) Manufacture your own suppressor
5) Install it and have fun

Some things to keep in mind:
-You may not "loan" your suppressor to anyone.
-You must carry proof of legal ownership with you.
-You cannot carry the suppressor across state lines without notifying the BATFE first via form 5320.

Six month waiting period. Fingerprints, background check, etc,. They don't have to approve you at all. Class 3's aren't guaranteed by the 2nd amendment, according to supreme court.

You can loan your suppressor or machine gun or sawed off shotgun, sure, or even rent it. But, you must be there, paperwork on you.
