What exactly do forensic psychologists do?

Postby aswynn81 » Tue Jul 10, 2012 2:42 pm

I'm going to be starting my junior year of high school soon and i've been thinking a lot about college. The two things that have always really interested me have been psychology and criminals/law, so i've been seriously considering doing something along the lines of forensic psychology or criminology. My question is: What specifically do forensic psychologists do and where do they work? I've been google searching this for a long time and haven't found much, I know that a lot of them work in government agencies or private practices but that's about all i can find. Please if you know anything about this, let me know. I'm really interested in this but i also want to make sure that i will be able to get a job once i graduate. Thank you so much!

Before you say anything (because i know someone will): this has absolutely NOTHING to do with any TV show, i know that this job is nothing like it looks on criminal minds or anything else, so don't bring that up, please!

Most forensic psychologists will work with criminals and report to courts their findings, usually by performing various personality tests, etc. Often, if someone tries for a NGRI plea, or something like that, a psychologist will be called in.
You could also work with cops, doing evals of them after critical incidents (basically whenever they pull their gun).
