What is going to happen? I had a virginia driver's license in maine when I got into an accident...?

So my family just moved to maine about six months ago, and I got into an accident about three week ago. Apparently, the police that arrived at the accident took my license and recorded the number and never said anything about my residence. Now, today a police came to my house saying that my license didn't check out. I had no clue why, and he was puzzeled about it as well. Taking an initiative I called the DMV in VA, and they told me my license had actually just expired about 27 days ago ( I was under the impression it was expiring in August, somehow, I overlooked the months 3 for march as 8 for august, I think the ink somehow got smudged me and the police didn't catch that). I know I am going to get into trouble for not having a Maine license when I am considered a resident, I really had NO intention of doing this, I wasn't aware of the laws that I had to change to Maine 30 days after I moved. Is there anything I can do now? I am planning on obtaining a Maine License on Monday ASAP...I don't know if that will help me. I didn't recieve any notices that I had to renew, and I know I am stupid for letting that go.....

You will be cited for not having a valid license. Could be bad, or may not cause you too much trouble, depending on the judge. Hopefully, you have insurance that will cover the claim. Since your license was expired, many of the "cheap" insurance companies will use this against you and refuse to pay out.

Yes, renew it , so if the cops come back , you can explain them the whole situation, and they will probably forget it , there are more problems they need to solve.
