There are babies born without immune system, if they are not kept in a 'sterile' room they die as babies as soon as they get some infection. The function of the immune system or rather parts of it may be diminished later because of a viral infection or maybe for other reasons, but since only a part of their immune system doesn't work they don't die very quickly, it may take some years without treatment(like for example AIDS). The function of immune cells is usually not lost completely because of a viral infection, since not all cells are infected at the same time and because new cells are produced continuously from stem cells.  The immune system is not suppressed because of spinal injuries.

I would like to point out that you can live without the spleen. You do have to make sure all of your immunizations are redone, up to date and take care not to get pnuemonia, especially. Also, Shasha, have you heard that fish oil supplements contain a high amount of PCB? I have been taking fish oil and just heard about this.
