What is the best evergreen for privacy and growing in shady areas?

Postby regenweald » Fri Mar 16, 2012 9:03 pm

I live outside of Philadelphia, PA and had 8- 8ft. Norway Spruce trees planted along one side of my property. There are VERY tall trees around us including Poplars, Oaks, etc. The Spruce trees get several hours of morning sun and then are in the shade. Despite my watering and fertilizing with Hollytone, 3 had to be replaced after 1st year, and now 2 more are dead. Do I have the right tree, or should I replace with something else?

The Norway Spruce is a fast growing evergreen. What happened to your tree was probably mites. They were bad last year. You can loose spruce trees before you know that they are infected. See a nursery for a spray. Bag worms usually attack in August but we lost 4 colorada spruces.

Morning sun is not putting out as much "grow power" as the afternoon sun. Full sun plants require a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. If you are getting less than that, or if you are getting 6 hours of only morning sun.. yes, consider a tree that requires less direct sun.. though evergreens are ok in partial shade.. and the norway spruce is no exception..

In my opinion, you have a good choice of tree for privacy and shaded areas.. If I were you, I would take a living sample from a dying tree in to your nearest garden center.. they may be able to tell you what is killing them.. Think of a few things here.. Do you have insects on the trees, do you have a thick layer of hard-pan causing water to not sink in to the ground quickly enough, causing flooding? Do you get enough water to the trees to prevent drought? Are you giving proper amounts of Holly tone? If so, get your soil tested.. could be that it has a pH that the tree doesn't like..

What is the best evergreen for privacy and growing in shady areas?

Evergreens make wonderful, quick hedges and privacy screens. When planting, zig-zag your trees to give a fuller effect and to allow the trees to get air and sun. This will also help the hedge give with the wind, preventing breakage and wind tunnels. It’s wise to plant more than one variety of evergreen in a border, so that disease and pests won’t destroy the whole planting.

I think the best evergreen for privacy and growing in shady areas is the Norway Spruce.
