What laws apply to application or background check forms asking to disclose certain class of convictions?

Are there any laws or regulations set by credit reporting agencies that would prevent a company from searching for criminal convictions that they did not ask the applicant to disclose?

For example, on a background check form or application a question asks the applicant to disclose any felony convictions that occurred within the past 7 years. * Can the company request for misdemeanors as well?
