DirectMale says the 14th amendment says it all, ERA is unnecessary yet Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia interpreting women's rights as unprotected in the U.S. Constitution. In a recent interview, Scalia stated that women are not protected under the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause. Right now, five justices have the power to pick and choose when women should be considered full citizens.   Max20characters 43 months ago

According to a chief Justice of the supreme court, all you have is voting rights. The 14th amendment was never meant to cover women and doesn't apply to them. Will this new movement start something. I think the torch is going to have to be handed over to a new generation. Do they care or are they willing to accept the new move to remove womens rights in order to control reproductive rights?   * 43 months ago

Women have been kept out of male dominated professions and only receive women only make seventy-five cents for every dollar men make. Women face poverty much more than men do.· In education, women and girls with disabilities get ignored and do not receive as much help as boys with disabilities. While Title IX has reduced gender discrimination in educational programs, women and girls still face disadvantages. For instance a girl's high school track team may be disqualified because of the shorts they wore like at Gulliver Academy in Florida, or being kept out of military academics like the Virginia Military Institute.· For Pensions, women are half as likely as men to receive a pension and the women who do receive a pension receive only half as much.· For social security benefits, married men will receive 100% of lifetime benefits. However, since homemakers' contributions to marriage partnerships are not fully valued, wives are then considered to be dependents and as a result receive lower payments. A widow will only receive 72% of their deceased husband's benefits, while divorced women only receive half.   Max20characters 43 months ago http://www.care2.com/news/member/451276626/2667261

Women have equal rights under the US Constitution. The ERA is redundant.   Directmale 43 months ago

It should not be neccessary to propose laws granting equal rights for anyone, but it is. Males have always held the position of supreme authority. Even the highest God among Gods, with rare exceptions, has always been viewed as masculine. I imagine this arose from the earliest days of human history where physical dominance and natural aggressiveness(i.e., testosterone driven) of the male empowered their supremacy; I suspect that all simian societies are male dominated, though I do not know this for a fact. Like species evolution, I believe in social evolution. Some of the more evolved have challanged notions of superiority from time to time, only to be met with fierce opposition; the advantages of having and keeping power are obvious. However, there are dangers to having too much power/wealth, as Muammar al- Qaddafi is discovering. The Equal Rights Amendment to the United States Constitution was originally written by Alice Paul in 1922 and in 1923 it was introduced in the Congress for the first time. In 1972, it passed both houses of Congress, but failed to gain ratification. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_Rights_AmendmentAs I said at the start of this post, it should not be neccessary to propose laws granting equal rights for anyone, but it is.   Bill1939 43 months ago http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_Rights_Amendment

That's nuts. Gender has nothing to do with sex. No matter what your gender identification, you're still a male or a female. Even if you're transgender, if you want to be a man but a woman physically, you still are not equal to men and if you get a sex change operation and become a male, you already have equal rights. So the word "sex" is totally appropriate. This isn't a gender issue at all.   * 42 months ago

Actually, at this point in time, they are moving backward. They aren't making progress in the US. Perhaps in Europe. I don't know. But not the United States.   * 42 months ago

"Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex."That is it. period. It's up before Congress every single year. You can still sign an online petition to support it. Why is this an issue? Are we really free or is there an undercurrent of Sharia like law and this is control the right wing doesn't want to give up?   Max20characters 43 months ago

I'm not very political, but Turbo's answer makes a lot of sense to me, and is very well put. I agree with her. In theory we are equal, but what is the reality?   Kar* 43 months ago
