What's The Very Best Span Of Study Regarding Increasing An In Depth Understanding Of Corporate Finance?

Postby wakeley58 » Thu Jan 02, 2014 2:34 am

Even though I've previously received an MBA and have no want to adhere to a CFA, CPA, or CMA(certified management accountant), I need certainly to additional my understanding of corporate financing. Spefically, cash program decision-making when it comes to debt funding selections(pipes, convertibles, bankruptcy routines, bonds) and equity alternatives. Of note, the CFM(Certified financial supervisor) has captured my interest but sadly it is these days defunct.I have regarded that alternative incorporated in the following url http://www.scps.nyu.edu/divisions/certificate.jsp?certId=63Any suggestions

What Is The Best Course Of Study With Respect To Gaining An In-depth Comprehension Of Corporate Finance?

Work experience is always the best teacher, but I found the Series 7(General Securities Representative) to be a helpful foundation here. Bonds, equities, general debt, and other corporate finance vehicles are covered in great detail(because most of the securities industry is focused on corporate financing vehicles - that's what almost all securities are). It can be hard to find a sponsor unless you actually plan to enter the industry(and you can't take the test without sponsorship) but it definitely adds a lot to your background and could be worth going through even if you can't take the final test.(Or you could go find a day trading firm that will let you open a "Prop" account for $15k, sponsor you for the test, then you just don't trade.) Beyond that, the NYU program does look very good. In conjunction with a program like that, I'd recommend contacting some of the Big Banks in NYC about internship programs. Depending on your timing, you may find that they're willing to offer you a low-paying but immensely informative 6-12 month internship where you're exposed to these actual questions. Seeing things in action, like securitizing debt, can be even more valuable than hearing about them in class.

What Is The Best Course Of Study With Respect To Gaining An In-depth Comprehension Of Corporate Finance?

The best course of study would be do simply do the research on your own. You'll save money for sure, and you very well might save time as well(since you'll be able to get right down to what it is you want to learn, and not have to sit through classes that discuss related but not-quite-relevant material). You're obviously an intelligent person and are clearly capable of picking up additional knowledge on the specific areas of corporate finance in which you're interested. I'd suggest trade journals and recent books(nothing published before 2005 --- everything changes so rapidly). The trade journals are often available for free at your local library. Most libraries also offer access to JSTOR(http://www.jstor.org/) which should offer more information on the subject than you could ever read in a lifetime. :-) Everyone's different, but I like to think that after spending all of that time getting an MBA, at some point along the way I'd have learned how to enrich my own knowledge on my own. My personal post-graduate research projects have all been surprisingly brief and richly rewarding, self-paced and as detailed as I wanted them to be. I hope you'd consider doing something similar. Good luck!
