What should I major in for this?

Postby oz » Thu Jul 26, 2012 4:31 am

My head is so fuzzy from all of the different majors out there. I want to work in a business corporation, dealing with the financial stats of the company. I was thinking maybe in a media company, but not sure. Would the best way to get to a place like that, would be majoring in economics and then going to business school? Or should I go for business administration and then business school?

Another option I was thinking would be to go for an finance attorney for a private company? Then would it be better to go into business administration or economics as my major before going to Law School?

Also which one would pay more of these two options?

For my first plan, I really want to work myself up to being a CFO of a company one day, but can I do that if I deal with the financial issues of a company? Theres a lot to the financial dealings of a private company so what can I do for this company? I don't want to be an accountant for the company but maybe analyze future sales, resource usage, determine trends, etc. Its a lot of questions within questions, thank you in advanced.

Economics may not be the best choice. A major in finance may be a better decision. Also, if you want to work with the company statistics, you could also always consider a degree in statistics.

Economics is not your best choice.

Your best choice would be to major in Finance. However, the finance world is very competitive and there are lots of licence test you have to take along the way. To be able to become an analyst, which is what it seems you would like to do. You also need to develop a stronger math background.

So it would be terrific for you to major in finance, but take the same math classes that an Engineer has to take as your electives. That is, Calc I, Calc II, Calc III, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra. This is just for you to have the background in order to be able to take Mathematical Statistics, and learn about Stochastic Calculus.

Finance majors dont have such an extensive math background. However, those who actually analyse the financial products and sometimes design new products do have this financial background. Because they have to do Risk Analysis which is based on Calculus and Probability at a sophisticated level.

Look up a career as an Actuary if you like math. If not, you can still be a financial officer, but you will be dealing more with paper work, clients and management rather than the number crunching and the mathematical modeling to try to "predict the future"

a great career source is www.bls.gov... just type in the search box Actuary and read a bit about it.
Warning: this is only if you DO like math a lot okey.
