Which would be better, doctor or lawyer?

Postby hawiovi » Sat Jun 16, 2012 7:16 pm

I'm already a junior in high school, wait, no. I'm back to freshman 'cause I migrated, and my age is for freshman. but recently... idk what to take, whether being a doctor or being a lawyer.

first off. ever since I was a child, I've always wanted to be a doctor. I like curing people and helping people out. but as I grow up, I realized that I am hemophobic, I feel so weak when there's a presence of blood or injury. I feel so weak even if I only get a small wound. on the other hand, I love arguments, debates, challenges, and winning in those, I'm used to speeches and all, but I think I have to improve it since I can be soft spoken most of the time. I know I can cure my hemophobic and soft spoken-ess over time so idk what to choose. right now, I'm considering taking law. oh and lastly, I'm sure that I'm never gonna be an unjust and greedy lawyer. I'm gonna be fair and just, and just want to help people out. and if I'm gonna be a lawyer, I'm gonna take something about business first as a 4 year course.

so for the questions....

what would fit me better?
what career would have a better wage? [like, what kind of both law/doctor would have the best wage and the comparison of the two]
what would have more benefits? [in terms of connections blah blah blah]

oh yeah, I know that being a lawyer is a bit risky. I have to be a very good lawyer to be able to find a good job. I am in America right now if that helps, though I plan to move to my home country after earning just right, to help the people there. so I really want to know these kinda stuffs ^^"

sorry for the long talk and lots of questions. I hope someone can answer these, accurately and seriously. I know 10 points as best answer is not enough to answer all of this but... please help me out >:)

PS. I don't care about the length of study. I can be very lazy about studying, but I'm sure that I can do these. I took 1 AP class as freshman and gonna take 4 AP [might be 5] classes as sophomore next year as a practice for higher education and overcome my laziness, so yeah. any more advice and tips are more than acceptable.

bonus questions: [I realized I have asked enough, so answering this is not necessary ^^"]
what is the best university for doctor or law?
with need-based scholarship?
with merit-based scholarship?

PS. you don't have to answer all of it. just answer what you are sure of. :) thanks~

Which would be better, doctor or lawyer?

Judging from your post, I am not sure if you are truly interested in those careers or not. I feel like you have been "brain-fed" like most people with people telling you being a doctor or lawyer is the most respectable.

Just because you like to argue won't guarantee that you'll like being a lawyer. Do you like to study rules, laws, old court cases, the different courts, government, etc.? That's what you'll be studying after all. Same thing with doctor - do you like the subjects of biology, anatomy, etc.?

Sorry, i am useless. I am just trying to give you a realistic perspective. Try researching around more. Don't restrict yourself to those jobs. Find what you LOVE to do, what you have a passion for.

If your ultimate goal is return to your own country and help your own people, you'll be more useful as a doctor than as a lawyer because your law degree will be about American law and will be more useful here.

Doctor pros -- high income, high level of respect, ability to save lives, knowledge transfers well overseas.

Doctor cons -- tough science courses required, excellent grades and MCAT scores required, lengthy time of preparation required to earn the degree and become certified and prepared as a doctor, very expensive education, large amount of debt by graduation, if you screw up along the way you won't get into med school

Lawyer pros -- potential for high income, ability to affect and protect lives, only requires a three-year degree and passing the bar exam to qualify to work as an attorney, good career for someone with a strong attention to detail and the ability to write well

Lawyer cons -- law school is expensive, scholarships may only cover a part of tuition but not living expenses, job prospects are still uncertain because many law firms have curtailed their hiring of new associates, your training prepares you to practice law in the U.S. but not in other countries.

You have to be really disciplined and focused to take on either of these careers and be successful at them.

Lawyers retain this luxury because society recognizes the legal system to be a morass of rules and regulations which ordinary citizens cannot hope to navigate on their own, while Over the ages the doctor-patient relationship has been defined, through rules of ethics and rules of law, as a fiduciary one, as a relationship founded in trust so you have make a doctor.

Hey..you should just become a Doctor?Your a freshman? well your still young so you have a few more years to decide. But i do think a career in the medical branch would be good.Law is not very good..their are too many lawyers out there! and it's tough work.. Remember to study biology at school. Also get used to seeing blood..It's true ..I'm also like that too when i see the sight of blood, i feel somewhat weak and tingly.I'm currently 19 years old living in Philippines. If you want you could just come back to the Philippines and study in Manila.
