I am always impressed by actors whose careers take them from stage to large and small screen, and here are three of my favorites...   Judy Dench. Power, range, ability... her classical stange training is a solid foundation for her solid strength as a performer. She?s proved herself on stage, television, and film, including providing vocals for film animation, and has justly won award after award for her performances. A Room with a View. Weatherby. Chocolat. Notes on a Scandel. Iris. Shakespeare in Love. And several James Bond films. She?s been playing diverse roles since the early 50?s.   Maggie Smith. Again, strong background on stage and screen, solid lifetime of memorable performances, depth and range of career. Gosford Park. Room with a View. Richard III. Tea with Mussolini. Becoming Jane. and the Harry Potter movies.   Diane Weist. Another strong stage and film background, with TV as well. Nice range of big films and small, eclectic ones. Exceptional stage experience. Hannah and her Sisters. Bullets over Broadway. Practical Magic. Parenthood. The Birdcage. I Am Sam.   ANd then, given time, I could come up with strong arguments for a bunch of others--just off the top of my head... Judy French, Helen Mirran. Vanessa Redgrave. Angelica Huston. Oylmpia Dukakis. Lots more who?ve either survived their youth in the theatre to get past the "she just has to be pretty" stage or who made a place for themselves and took interesting roles all the way along.

Jolene Blalock, Jeri Ryan and Billie Piper.   Now don't tell me they aren't character actors,  because they are.   And don't tell me they aren't good at what they do just because they are in popular science fiction series, and because all three are gorgeous, because they are.   This is a question that leads to biased answers, as there are many many good character actors out there that could classified as the best three female ones of our time.   Other actresses come to mind for me but I'm not sure they could be officially classified as character actors, including Rebecca DeMornay, Deborah Farentino, Bobbie Phillips...
