West Nile Virus prevention program? New York City has a Comprehensive Mosquito Surveillance and Control Plan(warning: pdf). A lot of cities and towns do nowadays if they've had any cases of West Nile Virus or are worried that they will. It usually involves some pesticides, but one of the most effective methods for cutting down the mosquito population is to monitor and remove small puddles of standing water, which mosquitoes like to breed in. And old tire with some rainwater in it is a perfect mosquito nursery. These programs can be very effective, and it's a little freaky sometimes. My little Midwestern city has a very good mosquito prevention program to combat West Nile, and while I appreciate that the little blood suckers aren't around, taking a walk on a humid evening without a cloud of them trailing me feels weird. I can live with a little weird to have a mosquito free evening, though. Sources: http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/doh/html/wnv/wnvhome.shtml Callisto 79 months ago Please sign in to give a compliment.
