Okay, CGI has taken on in leaps and bounds and it's now far more cost effective to have CGI over that of models..
While Captain America didn't appeal to a wider audience, as the fodder so to speak before was Ironman, Ironman 2, The Incredible Hulk and Thor, the films were action packed, which widely appeals to a large demographic, this is why the films work, you have you young children 8+ to frankly older fans who love this style of movie.
As for Thor, seriously, Brannagh did a fantastic job in direction as well in my humble opinion there was a strong cast, Thor / Loki characteristics worked perfect and Brannagh's take on the light bridge was visually breathtaking.
X-Men First Class I think you have missed the point, the film wasn't a steer to be X-Men 4, it was a prequel in concept to introduce the X-Men origins, this was in large pasted over in X-Men, this used fresh younger versions of the already established characters in those of Magneto, Prof X etc, as well introducing characters that would in the X-Men universe give birth (literally in some cases) to new mutants.
