Christianity - All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye so to them; for this is the law and the prophets.
Matthew 7:1

Confucianism - Do not do to others what you would not like yourself. Then there will be no resentment against you, either in the family or in the state.
Analects 12:2

Buddhism - Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful.
Udana-Varga 5,1

Hinduism - This is the sum of duty; do naught onto others what you would not have them do unto you.
Mahabharata 5,1517

Islam - No one of you is a believer until he desires for his brother that which he desires for himself.
Sunnah

Judaism - What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellowman. This is the entire Law; all the rest is commentary.
Talmud, Shabbat 3id

Taoism - Regard your neighbor’s gain as your gain, and your neighbor’s loss as your own loss.
Tai Shang Kan Yin P’ien

Zoroastrianism - That nature alone is good which refrains from doing another whatsoever is not good for itself.
Dadisten-I-dinik, 94,5

Because it's the basis of all morality. It's really just an expression of empathy, which is what causes compassion and most morality.

And human societies outside of religion, too.
The answer is simple: because it's not at all hard to observe that if you treat people nicely, they're more likely to treat you nicely. And if you treat people badly, they're more likely to treat you badly. We're a social species that uses reciprocal altruism, and socially punishes "cheaters."

Peace.

One of the first lessons of socialization is teaching the toddler 'what hurts you hurts others; so don't do that.' Of course it's repeated in religion. Most of the Ten Commandments are related to society.

Because human nature is the same everywhere, and the way to incentivise people to be good to one another is to make them put themselves in other people's shoes.

Because it's a good idea that helps keep a modicum of order in human society in the percentage of people who attempt to apply it.

It is one of the first rules of business.
It is second only to the one about not killing and eating potential customers.

Because it's a rule that sums up humanitarian morality to treat others kindly. It is a human concept, not a godly one.

The golden rule is all we need. Not those phony promises and behavior control mumbo jumbo.
