Why is it a crime for two minors to have sex?

Just wondering why this would be a law, I see sex more like a personal and family decision. I started having sex when I was 14 and my boyfriend was 15. He's turning 18 soon and I'm turning 17, almost age of consent in California. We're engaged and would be married but my parents are there to ruin all plans -_-

Anyways (trying not to get off subject) I've always known that it was illegal, just never really understood why. I understand a child 12 and under is pretty much wrong, but once you're able to make your own decisions why does the government have to interfere?

And if it's so illegal, then why offer birth control to minors? Most sex ed programs stop being "abstinent only", wouldn't that be illegal?

In the state of California the age of consent is 18, in some other states it is 16. This is the age at which lawmakers believe a person is mentally mature enough to understand his or actions and the consequences of those actions.

In some countries the age of consent is 13, and in other countries there is no "age of consent" as long as the individuals are married. One thing that people do not realize is that we now live in a highly sexual society. It is not uncommon for children to have sex at age 12. Therefore, by the time they are 16, they are very much so aware of what they are doing.

I personally think its a shame that peoples' lives are ruined for having consenual sex with a teenager, assuming that this teenager is already sexually active. The old excuse that teenagers are too young to consent needs to be thrown in the garbage. Our society has gone in one direction, but our laws have gone in another.

Did you know that in some states, such as PA, it is legal to have consenual sexual relations with a 16 year old, but if you take a nude picture of him or her, you will be locked away in prison for 10 years.

I am aware of one individual who has been registered as sex offender for the last 15 years for have sex with a teenager. Guess what? He is currently married to her and has several children, but he is still humiliated by our draconian laws.

Because lawmakers believe that children under (insert state's age of consent here) aren't mature or old enough to have sex. Birth control is given to minors because its basically a statement of the government saying that "we know that this law isnt being upheld by individuals so we are taking precautions against teen pregnancy" and while its mostly used for an actual birth control purpose, it can help some females with the menstruation difficulties (hormones can produce very bad results, i.e. vomitting, irregular periods, etc.).

It's illegal for an adult to have sex with a minor. Sex among minors is not recomended because they are not mature enough and can't handle the consecuences.
They offer birth control because they'll have sex anyway and it's better if you are protected in this case!

Once your 16, your legally able to consent. The reason it is, is so that parent's that dont take care of their kids can be held accountable incase their kid goes around screwing people and even pregnant. It makes it possible to hold someone accountable.

It is illegal for obvious reasons. I am 20 years old. If it were not illegal to have sex with children above the age of 12 I could be banging all of the 13+ year olds I wanted.

The age of consent is set up to protect kids from stuff like that. Is it perfect? No. But if there were no laws in relation to sex imagine what things would be like.

Additional details answer:

As long as your parents do not try to press charges he can not be arrested. Really the law is based on your feelings and your parents feelings. If you and the parents are ok with it then there is really nothing the law can do.

Sex among minors is illegal as well. Not only are they not mature enough to handle the consequences but they are also basically raging hormone machines. As a kid hitting puberty all you want is sex...and if you got it like you wanted humans would populate faster than rabbits.
