Why ricksaw and taxi fares are controlled by the government in India?

though there is no control on the fares by the private airlines?
I also wonder why there are no controls on the doctors, lawyers and other professionals as well as banks, insurance companies, etc. on their charges and malpractices and save the public from the open loot they are indulging in?

Why ricksaw and taxi fares are controlled by the government in India?

Postby elkan80 » Tue Dec 20, 2011 2:31 am

India is a country of people with diverse attitudes and diverse intentions. That what is considered as corruption by you may be a perfectly correct thing for me to indulge in. Because my attitude is of that kind. And I have been nurtured by my family traditions in the way that I am following.

But if everybody is allowed to have their go, then this world will become a totally ungovernable place. Therefore Government has to step in and specially in places where a huge population gets affected. The banks, airlines, doctors etc. are facilities for high profile people like you and me. Still more than 80% of our population doesn't hold a bank account. The poor don't visit doctors when they are ill, because they can't afford to. Lawyers- even I keep a distance from them.

We feel the pinch when we get our share of 'injustice'. But there are 70- 80% of our population who do not even know what justice means to them!

Edit@ Mr. Daftary:

I never meant that the services which are for elites should not be cared for. Whatever the government is spending on, whether for the haves or for the have'nots, should be managed properly . My point is that there are 80% of the voices that are not being heard and are lost in the din of these media and elite propagandists who always have only their points of interests in mind. And they expect this country to march towards progress leaving the vast chunk behind.

It is not the government that can do the job. It instead are the people who are vociferous and call themselves elites. Let them take the call.

probably for the same reason that there are strict controls on taxis in the US.
taxis w/o controls have a history of taking advantage of passengers.

once the controls that were put in place back in the 1930s were removed, by GW Bush, it lead to the worldwide recession that we're still experiencing.
pretty obviously those controls should still be in place.

The various governments of India only believe in advertising their achievements and not what way they have helped the people. We do not have a government of the people and for the people. It is government of political rogues for their Kith and Kin.

Rickshaw and taxi fares are government controlled? Not anywhere in Tamil Nadu. From my visits, neither are they in Delhi or Jaipur. We people have to go by the prices the drivers name. Maybe such a thing is present in theory, but its far from it in practice!

There are institutions for control on banks, airlines, insurence com. But control only takes place at papers and data. I do not know about any such incidence.

Who said it? Govt has no control on rickshaws and taxi fare. Only in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad govt has control on fare of rickshaws and taxis. Most of time i also preferred to hire private taxis like mreucabs, Olacabs, tabcabs etc.
