by the great majority of the people?
or to say it better....would you expect that in a major country like the USA that supposedly has a govt that is the representative of the people at large that if you took 6 major laws or policies that the country has, and if you did a true scientific and valid poll of the people that you would find that the people approve of these major laws and policies? Lets take for example for the USA ...5 policies, laws, etc Do you approve of the current 1) situation pertaining to illegal immigration and the govt's stance on it 2) do you approve of the current situation pertaining to the fact that the country is in so much debt and that there the revenues vs expenses relationship is so out of wack? 3) do you approve of the current trade and tariff or no tariff policies that allow for the jobs of citizens to be so easily shipped to other countries by corporations to boost their profits? 4) Do you approve of our current foreign policy choices that has the USA in perpetual warfare overseas? 5) Do you think the american health care system compared to all the possible systems is a fair one and services rendered are fairly or reasonably priced and affordable to the great majority of citizens? 6) Do you approve of the choice lawmakers are about to make to renew the Bush tax cuts for 100% of tax payers over the alternative which was discussed of renewing them for 99% of the population and raising taxes on the top 1% of income earners?
I fully do not expect that its possible to get everyone or even most everyone in a society happy with their govt's policies, but when that govt is supposed to represent more or less the will of the people..since they elect the govt to office, would you not expect that at least some of the time that the people agree with the laws and policies?
I have a belief...and I know its just a belief since I do not have scientific polling to support it, but I have a belief based on some observation that it seems that the american people strongly disagree with the govt on most major policies and laws. It just seems to me whenever a hot topic is debated, and congress finally puts together its final bill and it becomes law that most people think its a bad law...and the same with general major policies as well like I mentioned above..like immigration, trade, foreign policy etc.
So what is the problem? what is causing this disconnect? we have elections every 2 years and the candidates run around making campaign promises and we citizens do in fact choose the ones that tell us the things we seem to like or prefer, so what happens after that? why is that we elect the candidates of our choice but hate their laws and policies?
