1. Drug Law: Recently, several countries have changed their drug laws to make most recreational drug use legal. Imagine that there is a measure on the ballot to do the same here in the United States. How will you vote on this measure?
a. Your answer MUST be based on moral principles, rather than merely empirical concerns (in other words, if there are facts about certain drugs and their effects that factor in your decision, you must explain how those facts affect moral reasoning – why are they relevant? What principles are at issue?)
b. Your answer needs to address the following issues: In considering Mill’s Harm Principle, should we adopt a broad or a narrow interpretation of harm? Why? Given your interpretation of the kind of harm that is relevant, (i.e. the type of harm that opens one up to interference by the state) explain how the Harm Principle supports your conclusion about legalizing drug use. For example, Wilson seems to adopt a broad interpretation of harm, while Husak has a more narrow interpretation. Should we have different policies for different drugs, and if so, what facts about any specific drug will be morally relevant in making that assessment?
