1999 Acura CL Transmission died so early?

Postby napayshni65 » Fri Apr 01, 2011 1:46 pm

Hi,

I have a 1999 Acura CL 3.0 and its transmission just died. I just drove this for 130K miles and provided this is a Japanese car I am shocked to see this issue.

Does anyone know if there is any pending class action lawsuit for this?

Acura is saying that it will cost about $3,400 to fix this. It is so costly!! Any workaround?

Honda did have a recall for this issue. You can google it, mainly for 99-03 versions.

I believe the issue was the 3rd gear clutch disk being of less than satisfactory materials.

Nothing you do can fix that short of a revised trans, so what the others said about maintaining cars being THE cure in ALL cases....bullsh!t.

Nope, no lawsuits I am aware of. Take it to a smaller shop and get another quote. May also consider a "used" transmission. Keep in mind it is a foreign car and will almost always cost more to fix.

Most transmissions should not have issues that soon unless abused. My 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass had 228k miles when I sold it, never had a transmission service (but I should have!).

As a side note being a "Japanese" car does not mean it is reliable. There are a lot of people out there dumping thousands in repairs on their foreign cars and still swearing they are the most reliable vehicles out there, I always have to laugh after I see people I know personally who do that, but most of the time I help them fix them anyway. :)

well the mileage ain't the issue, was the transmission abused? like hard acceleration from a stop? was it maintained? fluids should have been flushed and filter replaced at some kind of interval like every 30,000 miles, if you rode it hard and did no maintenance then you should be happy as hell it lasted that long.
