Anyone Know The California Medical Insurance Procedure Code For Receiving A Flu Shot?

Postby Jerold » Thu Feb 06, 2014 8:38 am

I have PPO insurance through Blue Cross of California. I had a flu shot at my local pharmacy, paid for it myself and submitted the paperwork to the insurer. Blue Cross is refusing to reimburse me unless I get a procedure code from the drugstore. Fat chance. I'd like to resubmit my claim with a procedure code and, hopefully, the pharmacist's signature. Any suggestions out there?

The code for Influenza Immunization is 90656 for an adult, and an IM shot, not for the nasal vaccine. The administration code is G0008 and the ICD-9 or diagnosis code is V04.81. They should be able to process your claim with this information(It was just a flu shot right? not mixed with any other shot?) Was it a prefilled syringe? If it was drawn from a multi-dose vial it changes the code to 90658.   Im sure the pharmacy would give you the code.

I don't think the pharmacy charged you more than $20. so you can avoid a possible stroke by making it up somewhere else.  for all you folks that have not heard:  You can get a flu shot at any local Health Dept. for about $4- or $5.00.

You will save yourself a ton of anger by just calling it a bad debt.
