Apartment resident is paying indemnity but I'm not insured, then why am I paying extra, WTF?

Postby atworth49 » Mon Jul 09, 2012 6:02 pm

Hello. I just moved into an apartment and it's not the first but it is the first time I had to get rental insurance. It is mandatory and part of the lease agreement. Any who, I was giving two option, OPT#1 participate in their "Resident Indemnity Program" or OPT#2 find my own insurance and show them proof. With option2, I am thinking about just paying for it once then just take it off once I show them proof but then again if they found out if I am not insured I can be kicked it. Hmmm....
Now here is what it says on my lease:
Option 1)
I will participate in the "Resident Indemnity Program" for $8.00 per month. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE RESIDENT INDEMNITY PROGRAM IS NOT INSURANCE AND DOES NOT PROVIDE ME WITH BODILY INJURY COVERAGE OF ANY COVERAGE FOR PERSONAL PROPERTY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.

And of course I picked OPT#1 because I didn't want to pay the actual $30-60 renter insurance but I am thinking I might as well since I am paying an extra $8 with the rent($750) for NOTHING.

The name of the apartment is ClearView Apartment affliation with CottonWood Residental it's here in Michigan. So just giving you guys heads up if you plan on ever renting here.

You should get renter's insurance. It won't cost you but about $10 a month.

Renters insurance, mine was $ 26, for 6 months then nothing, so covered for a year.

My cousin didn't have insurance, apt. caught on fire, lost everything.
