Buying a condo out of state, can i take airfare to check it out off Taxes?

Postby eilis » Sun Feb 26, 2012 4:20 pm

If my dad buys a condo out of state and he lets us fly to visit it once a yr to check on it can he take the airfare as a business expense? He has not asked a lawyer or real estate agent. He is just looking into the investment part and asked us if we would be interested to fly once a yr.

If he is operating the condo as a business, then he can purchase your tickets and HE can declare the business expense.

Be careful with this.... if his business expenses are 'excessive' the IRS will dis-allow them.

If you are planning to declare the purchase of the tickets yourself..then you need to prove you are in the business of property management. Income and expenses to back that up. You would then have various 1099s issued to you by your client(s) Again..be careful..if your 'business' expenses are a large percentage of your business income..the IRS will dis-allow the expenses.

Only he could do that, and only write it off the income from the property. It would have to be the purpose of the trip, not a vacation. If you stayed more then 24 hours he would be red flagged for an audit.
