Can a student visa be revoked because of a speeding ticket?

Postby iker » Tue Jun 19, 2012 4:16 pm

My boyfrined is currently in the UK on a Tier 4 General student visa. He has been her only 9 months, so he is still driving with his US driving licence. He was caught on camera ding 40Mph in a 30mph zone, so we received a notice from the Kent Police. With a UK driving licence you would get a £60 fine and 3 points off your licence, but I am not sure what happens with a US licence. Above all, I am worried it may cause problem with his VISA. Do you have any knowledge and/or experience that would help me understand what are the consequences of this infraction? Thank you.

He has received a fixed penalty notice. He just pays the fine and sends in his licence. He'll escape the points but can't escape the fine. There is no court hearing unless he wants to argue the case or fails to pay so he won’t be prosecuted and no record of the offence will be kept.

FPNs are not criminal convictions and in any case even if he went to court and got a conviction, a minor offence like this would not affect his visa in any way.

He only has three more months during which he can legally drive on his US licence. He needs to start thinking about taking a UK test asap. Make sure he knows that there is a LOT more to UK driving tests than US tests. He'll need a lot more preparation than he needed for his US test.
