Can anyone give me advice on my dachshund's injury?

Postby kyledyr » Sun Jun 17, 2012 7:02 pm

A few days ago my families dachshund jumped from our sofa and dislocated a disk. Due to the swelling, she has lost power and feeling in her two back paws. The vet gave us medicine to lower the swelling, but when we saw no change, they changed it to a stronger med. So far, she is getting around better, and it does seem the swelling has gone down. Unfortunately, the vet said that if she still is unable to move her back legs she will have to undergo surgery. I'm extremely worried and am hoping she will not be paralyzed forever. Does anyone have any advice for me on this, or any personal stories? Thanks so much!

the same thing happened to my chiweenie (half dachshund half chiwhuahua). He couldn't move his back legs for day but soon enough he started walking again. I suggest you get you dog the surgery or it will be paralyzed. You don't want your dog to be in pain the best thing you can do is get it the help it needs.

First thing to try is crate rest with prednisone, a muscle relaxant, and a pain med - I'm very surprised your vet didn't tell you this.

She needs absolute crate rest for at least 6 weeks, this sometimes helps.

If it is beyond that, then she will need back disk surgery, there is usually only a small time frame when this can effectively be done.

You should NOT be puzzled like this, your vet should have put your dog on proper medication and absolute crate rest - only out to potty and eat, then back to rest - IMMEDIATELY, your dachsie should NOT be walking around at all.
That's the first thing you do if there is a chance it will help.

If it is beyond this, she needs surgery, but she can't be walking around on just medication.

Please talk to your vet, or - better - got to one that has experience with dachshunds.

Can anyone give me advice on my dachshund's injury?

This happened to our doxy boy going up steps to the bed. HE slipped. I bought an elongated laundry basket, made is soft and comfy, toted him around in it for 6 weeks. Had to lift him out/in and hold him up to potty. Otherwise he stayed there on bedrest. After a couple weeks he improved and I wuold set him beside his partner and us (his partner would try to get in basket with him). He was kept clean, powdered and was NEVER left alone. He recovered!! During tho, he was so sad.

Bedrest. Don't let her walk around. Cater to her needs. Keep her spirits up. Keep her clean and dry. Love her.

You are welcome to email me if you want.

No need to worry my aunites daschund had this they use the medication first as they do not want to operate unless they have to. My aunties dog did have the operation and is back to her normal self apart from she can't jump. It is know tho because of their long backs its best to buy little stairs for them, so because me and my mom had a daschund we decided to buy steps so it would be easier for her trust me it helps :)
