Jobs should not be able to look at ones criminal records. We all should have an equal opportunity to be employed. If one committed murder at 18 and served 25 years to life and was released. There is a high probability they would not return if they were given an equal opportunity to be employed and support themselves. The effect of jobs hiring a non-criminal versus a criminal is devastating on the economy.
Not allowing criminals to work negatively affects the economy by making taxpayers pay for criminals well being. The working class must pay taxes to fund prisons which the cost has risen from 11 billion to 50 billion a year. With a bad economy there is few jobs available and the employers would rather employ a non-felon than a convicted felon. These actions are reflected on the percentage of repeat offenders because of the inability to find jobs. If criminals were given an equal opportunity to work they would be able to support themselves when released from incarceration and are less likely to be a burden on our economy or become a repeat offender.
Background checks are needed to keep our children safe in schools, day cares, and the like. Without the proper screening sex offenders may be employed as teachers which can put our children in jeopardy of being a sex crime victim. Just as they can obtain a job as a teacher they may be able to run a daycare and have children in their reach for a great time period. The ability for a known felon to sustain his own well being is not worth a child being a victim to these types of crimes. Yes, even non offenders may become a sex offender but the percentage of a known offender to repeat the crime is much higher. Therefore, screening employs it still and effective part of an employment process.
Not just our children's security is important, but also ours as an individual and our co-workers safety is also important. If a criminal who has been convicted of a violent like crimes is employed the employer is no longer providing a safe work environment for its employs. As a result of an employer unknowingly employing a serial killer or rapist this raises the risk of an employ falling victim to a violent crime. As an example I work at dollar tree where we've hired an individual who has been convicted of armed robbery, but to lower the risk of harming our employs or theft we do not allow this individual to close. *should this example be removed does it go aginst my arument.
Banks and owners of cooperation's most likely would want to be informed if they are employing a felon who has been convicted of fraud or robbery related crimes previously. The unawareness of employing an individual that has committed these crimes can financially collapse a business in a worst case scenario. As an example, if a cooperation unknowingly assigned a felon convicted of fraud as head treasure of the company the ability for that individual to formulate some type of fraud is a high risk. That can devastate a cooperation. Even in a small businesses scenario employ theft is one of the main problems to inventory shrinkage. The result of employ theft is billions of dollars lost annually; therefore, employers should have knowledge of individuals backgrounds for the company's financial security.
Yes, in some instances background checks are a crucial piece of information most employers would want to know about a potential employ, but this same information may also be affecting our economy in a negative way. An equal opportunity for felons can be reached if we allow background checks for government jobs and also jobs that involve children. Sense these types of jobs deal with national security, and the security of our children safety. Other jobs as grocery stores, warehouses, construction and the like should use their best judgment on choosing their employs. This may give the impression that these jobs safety and financial security is not important, but something must give for a change to occur. If we need to employ these criminals somewhere its better for them to be in the general workforce than in the work force involving children and government. As Americans we all should be given an equal opportunity despite our previous actions.
