Can felons join the navy?

Postby chansomps » Wed Jul 25, 2012 7:46 pm

I'am a felon with breaking and entering as well as a grand larceny and i'am trying or looking into joining the navy. I tried army and was told no. My plan is to inform my probation officer about my plan as well as my lawyer. My key thing is the judge knows my father (who's passed) and everytime im in front of him he says my dad would be disappointed. So my trying to join the navy is 1) to better myself and turn my life around. 2) get out of VA (the town i'm in. The law enforcement((yes the police really do lie to me and it is pretty messed up))and citizens like to stab me in the back) 3) make my father proud. My boss was in the navy n told me i have a pretty good chance just don't say anything about any drug use. Look i just want a straight answer before i start talking to everyone and get the ball rollling. I was also planning on writting a letter to the judge informing him of my plan cause i've sat in jail before n it got me no where sitting in jail won't help me just make me worse. Like i said the judge n my father were friends both military. So i just want to let him know that i want to better myself and play on his friendship with my father n tell him my dad would want this. I don't know how well it'll work but i'm hoping it'll have some sort of impact. Cause ya'll don't know me or how my life is. The Navy is my only way out i've exhausted all other options :/

No branch of the armed forces is going to enlist you. Sorry, you'll have to figure something else out.

You are a convicted felon and you really want to 1) turn your life around; 2) get out of VA; and 3) make your father proud, by joining the Navy.

First off, none of the military services are accepting convicted felons as recruits because there are many well-qualified candidates fighting for the same slots. Second, even if a judge writes a letter, don't expect a miracle; you are still a convicted felon competing against many other better qualified candidates. Third, you seem to think you might have a better chance of enlisting in the Navy if you LIE ABOUT PREVIOUS DRUG USE? Are you kidding me?

I am sorry that you made personal choices that put you in your present state, but the military is not a rehabilitation program. I honestly think that you will not have any luck with your plan of joining the Navy.

Many people mistakenly believe that the military will take anyone. This is far from true. Granted, between 2003-2008 the military was granting morals waivers for some criminal records. Since 2008, the military has been glutted with people who want to join and have greatly increased recruiting standards. Your felonies would keep you out. Why don't you check into other programs such as park rangers or firefighting. I am not sure what their policies are regarding felons but it is worth looking into. Felonies will keep you out of many government jobs so your best bet is to try to get an education and get into business for yourself. Have you checked into free vo-tech training that is often provided by trade unions. Many unions offer apprenticeships that lead to decent paying jobs. Getting good training can get you out of where you are because many of these jobs are found throughout the US. You could also look at joining a private ship's crew. Even though this door is closed, you have other opportunities. You have to do the research and work hard.

OK first of all you can go ask a Navy recruiter even see if they will do a waiver and if by any chance they will let you do a waiver, you would have to get VERY STRONG Personnel reference letters and even then the Navy still might say no. Now what you can try is getting a letter or 2 from your local congressman or assembly person, if you or your dad knows any high ranking people in the military or retired get letters from them and maybe if you are lucky and they let you submit a waiver the Navy might say yes it's a 50/50 chance. Ok lets say they say now because it is a felony or misdemenor you can try other federal jobs and sometimes you might get hired. Look at USAJOBS.com, look at maybe a contracted job for the department of defense. Oh just reading you story if you are on formal informal probation no US Military will even think about doing a waiver so don't go talk to the recruiter. You might want to look at jobs like Truck driver, driver something where they won't be doing a clearance. You might want to see if you can go to a trade school for like mechanics or something like that. Unless you get a lawyer and get all those charges dropped you will not be able to join sorry. They is always options, school is one of them, getting a regular job ask your probation officer to help you get a job, jobs like department of forestry etc etc good luck

If you are currently on probation, the answer is a definate no for all branches. You can't join with any "pending" or ongoing legal issues.

The following website at military.com addresses felonies. http://www.military.com/join-armed-forces/disqualifiers-law.html

Note however, at this time, the military (all branches) is not even granting waivers for misdemeanors. The chance that you'll get one for a felony is near zero.

I'm a felon too and tried to join the Army but couldn't get a waiver. I never tried for the Navy but if the Army has said no I'd say it will be probably be the same with the Navy. It's mad the way that mistakes you make in the past always seem to come back on top of you.
