Chances of becoming a state trooper?

Postby darrick34 » Sat Mar 03, 2012 12:40 am

When i was 13 i was detained for breaking and entering. I was brought down to the station for questioning. Luckily my father knew the owner of the apartment so he didn't press any charges so i was never fingerprinted or brought upon a judge. About a few months ago i went down to the station to get a background check and i don't know if its an arrest or what record but its sealed. I don't think it can be a criminal record because i was never convicted of anything.

Now I'm 18 and thinking of a career in law enforcement. My plan is to get an associates degree in Criminal Justice at a community college, after join the military (Air Force or Army) for 4 years, then use my GI bill to get my bachelors and then apply for my law enforcement job. My question is with all of that info what do you think my chances will be?

I am a former deputy sheriff, and I feel your chances are excellent. Only a felony conviction or one for a high misdemeanor involving moral turpitude would disqualify you. You have a good plan, and seem to have your head screwed on straight. My department, like many gives a five percent prefernce score on the hiring process to vets. Best of luck.

You shouldn't have any problem with that, but why don't you skip CC and go straight into the service. Then use your GI bill to pay for everything afterwords. It makes more fiscal sense to do it that way.
As to your record, probably none existent and not a big deal. Shouldn't stop you from getting hired.

The everything the police has must be cleared. The only thing that gets sealed is the arrest record amd criminal record. You were not convicted or charged or arrested so you dont have a record. You only got detained. The police detain people for investigative reasons or for safety or for questioning.

Glad you learned that sitting in the backseat of a police car handcuffed or sitting in a cell is not for you.
