What are my chances of being able to become a NY state trooper?

Postby marq » Tue Mar 13, 2012 9:36 am

When i was 13 i was detained for breaking and entering. I was brought down to the station for questioning. Luckily my father knew the owner of the apartment so he didn't press any charges so i was never fingerprinted or brought upon a judge. About a few months ago i went down to the station to get a background check and i don't know if its an arrest or what record but its sealed. I don't think it can be a criminal record because i was never convicted of anything.

Now I'm 18 and thinking of a career in law enforcement. My plan is to get an associates degree in Criminal Justice at a community college, after join the military (Air Force or Army) for 4 years, then use my GI bill to get my bachelors or masters and then apply for the NY state trooper. My question is with all of that info what do you think my chances will be?

I found the following on E-How about qualifications for a New York State Trooper. The link is set forth at the end. It speaks of a felony criminal record as being disqualifying. From what you have written, you do not have a felony record, so you might be okay. In any event, be sure to be up front about it. It is usually better for them to hear it from you, so you can explain it, rather than find it out themselves, and think you were trying to hide something. Good luck with your career.

Moral Character and Physical Appearance

Troopers must have a good moral character and have no felony criminal record. They must be willing to work rotating shifts that will include holidays. They must also have a neat and professional appearance at all times, with no visible tattoos, piercings or other body art. A trooper applicant may be asked to remove any tattoos that would be visible while wearing her uniform or that are inconsistent with the values of the New York State Police.
