Try Inversion and if possible buy a tens unit. The inversion unit works wonders on my entire spine, I purchased a stand alone unit a few years back. Excellent quality (gym brand quality), I try to use it several times a week. Caution, 1st time user can experience some lightheaded feelings, as like any other exertion it takes a couple weeks to get use.
As for the tens unit, it does work and can be used while sitting. The tens unit converts dc power into electrical pulses. I have feel asleep using the unit, it does relax as well as relieve impinged nerve pain.
Both above mentioned are only suggestions, please check with you doctor before using either one.
I have been through much more then I care to discuss, yes some treatment work and others don't. or me, none of the shots had any impact, nothing over a couple days.
One item seems to bring some relief is called a Lidoderm Patch.
My opinion about surgery, only your last resort, very last resort. Going under the knife for disc issues can lay you up for a while.
