Do internships need workers disability ( workers compensation) if not paid?

Postby unss94 » Thu Apr 07, 2011 3:34 pm

this is my last year of high school..and the past 4 have been rough. this year my mom is allowing me to do an internship with her. so i miss one hour of school everyday which helps me so much its been a real miracle that ive been able to do this. well i shes owns her own business..and is a psychologist..where making a special program for children with DD and mental disabilities.
and i know God will use us this program. but my teacher is threatening to kick me out of the program and make me a hard class instead because since my mom owns her own business and does not have employers..its just her..she travels to different buildings to do her work she does not have a working compensation...and apparently my teacher says i need one to stay in the program...BUT i am doing an INTERNSHIP..i will be working with young children...a working compensation is for those who have jobs and GET PAID so if something where to happen they would still receive a check..so why does a high school student need one if they are doing a internship???...i need some help or resources so i can show him that i do not need an working compensation. i know each state has a different law..so i live in michigan..if anyone can help me find something stating internships don't need that it would mean the world to me.. i NEED too stay in this internship..for so many reasons i cant even explain..thank you for the help = )

Do internships need workers disability ( workers compensation) if not paid?

No, because you are a VOLUNTEER. So you do not get covered under workers comp.

Workers comp not only replaces your pay, but would replace your pay from a second job, if you were disabled. More importantly, it covers your medical bills, if you're hurt at "work".

Your mom needs to call the agent that writes the rest of her business insurance. She needs to get that agent to write a letter, stating that she has no workers comp, and isn't required to carry it, and as an unpaid intern, you don't qualify for workers comp benefits in your state.

You will not be able to fight this alone. You will need her agent to write this letter for you.

For online research, search out Michigan Workers Compensation Board.
