Renter's insurance rates will vary widely from community to commuity, but overall it's pretty cheap insurance. You are doing the right thing by getting yourself some coverage. In my experience, there are likely to be several companies offering quite similar rates for coverage. Property insurance rates tend to vary widely from one community to another, because companies factor in their past experience. All sorts of thing like the probabilities of fire, earthquake, flood, and crime will affect the rates in a particular community. But most large companies will have similar experience(or expectation of future loss) due to those factors. Plus, they are competing with each other for business, so they wind up charging pretty similar rates. Three suggestions:You could try calling up your local Allstate or State Farm agency and asking for a quote(you may even be able to get quotes on-line through their web sites). Or look in the Yellow Pages for a local insurance agency who doesn't represent a single company -- they can do the price comparison for you and find the cheapest rate. Who do you have your auto insurance through? Most auto insurance companies also offer property insurance, and you can generally get a discount by combining both policies.
